Summary/Abstract: The paper explores the role of authenticity in media, especially new media. It seeks to answer the question as to how factors determining authenticity undergo change, whether or not these factors vary across media, and whether the data-rich, networked character of new media may aid the checking of authenticity. The paper discusses the features of texts appearing on new media platforms, defines the notion of authenticity, then reviews the criteria by which the authenticity of a message/a communicator is measured. Authenticity is always a property of the source, which can be a communicator (e.g. in certain genres) or it can be associated background information, the message itself, or possibly the place of communication. In printed and electronic media, the communicator (a reporter giving his/her name, a professional journalist) and the place of communication have had a larger role in determining authenticity. In the online space, multiple endorsements have become more crucial, as anybody can act as a journalist.
