Summary/Abstract: Through the life story of the railway man Sandor Korenchy (1885‒1976), we gain insight into the lives of families. The brief and concise description records history over seven decades that has had a profound impact on family life. A workplace that promised and sparked envy and meant a secure future was able to separate the family. It first provided protection during the horrors of war, and then became a source of horrors. Those decades, often filled with crucial life changes, shaped the fate of a family that an individual could not interfere with. During a series of these tragedies, one had to serve the eternal "state" and in spite of all the temptations to remain human and support the family. My grandfather fulfilled this task and raised his nine motherless children.
