Summary/Abstract: The paper aims at providing a theoretical approach to academic entrepreneurship. In a narrow sense, academic entrepreneurship refers to licensing activities and the creation of spin-off companies, which have the role of exploiting the results of intellectual property, and in a broad sense it comprises any activity that goes beyond traditional teaching/learning roles, is innovative, involves elements of risk and leads to financial rewards for researchers and for their employing institution. Entrepreneurial universities facilitate entrepreneurial activity through various instruments such as infrastructure, consulting services or other support schemes such as incubators, science parks or technological transfer offices that had been opened in order to facilitate the dissemination of technologies towards business-related activities. The paper comprises an introductory part, followed by the presentation of activities related to academic entrepreneurship, emphasizing the role of entrepreneurial universities, of spin-offs, but also of some theoretical models that describe the relationship between universities and the non-academic environment.
