Summary/Abstract: The article contains a brief survey of establishing the status of the folk singer, as an informant, in the course of the folk song collection process, as well as discussing the most prominent tendencies in picturing the folk singer in Lithuanian folkloristics, and covering the possible perspectives of the future investigations. Already the first folk song collectors paid special attention to the talented folk singers, yet the systematical recording of data related to the informants was established only in the folk song collections by brothers Juškas, taking deeper roots in Lithuanian folkloristics as late as in the first half of the 20th century. This was also a period of growing interest in the famous folk singers, who subsequently received exceptional attention in the second half of the 20th century, becoming the main subjects of essays and studies, while collections of their folklore and individual creativity were published as separate monographs. On the other hand, although today we have accumulated a hundred-years-old experience in folklore collection and publication, discussions regarding the quality and quantity of the recorded data related to the informants still seem to be quite relevant.
