Summary/Abstract: This article ventures to interrogate the phonic adaptation of foreign proper names in Polish and German. The author attempts to compare pronunciation rules of xenophonic elements adopted from current pronunciation dictionaries. It will be proposed that deviations from these rules in terms of adaptation result from systemic differences between the languages under scrutiny. The final part describes current research in phonetic coding, structure of empirical analysis and tentative conclusions.
