Summary/Abstract: Democracy as a political system was created by the Athenians in ancientGreece. The height of its development occurred in the 5th century B.C. under Pericles. The achievements of the Athenians of that time becamean unquestionable heritage of Europe. The Athenian democracy, however,superior as it was among the political systems of the time was from the beginningfraught with threats that eventually brought about its decline. The ups and downsof democracy in Athens were the source of inspiration for the well-knownAthenian playwrights, concerned for the motherland. Their tragedies andcomedies are the ground of this paper.
