Summary/Abstract: Zenonas Varnauskas created decorative compositions with geometric patterns and strongly stylized figurative motifs. He used a specific method of figure composition with horizontal stripes, introduced to him by the famous Lithuanian modernists Viktoras Petraviikys and Liudas Truikys who were pedagogues at the Kaunas Institute of Applied and Decorative Arts (former Kaunas School of Art),. The article analyses the textile works of Zenonas Varnauskas in the 5–7 decades of the 20th century. It links the analysis with the socio-political contexts of the aforementioned period. It can be concluded that the textile works of Zenonas Varnauskas have a modernist orientation and represent a unique Lithuanian textile school close to Bauhaus in terms of rhythms and geometry patterns. Despite of the Soviet context, this orientation was viable in Kaunas until the end of the 7th decade of the 20th century. The article reveals the creative contribution of Zenonas Varnauskas to the formation of this local art school.
