Summary/Abstract: During the past 20 years museums have been undergoing unprecedented evolution. Ceasing to be just cultural centres reflecting facts of history and culture, they have moreover become a fertile soil for the establishment of new such centres. This, along with the great dynamism in the development to contemporary society has been confronting museum workers with new problems. These mostly relate to the looking for sources for the financing of forms of exhibition displays, cultural and educational work interesting and attractive to the viewers of today. The modern science of museum running lags behind in the elucidation of these problems of museum practice. This exacerbates the problems, especially in countries where sweeping social changes are being currently carried out. That is why it is imperative that the subjects of management and economics of museums be discussed by economists and museum curators alike. It is high time we accepted that it is a normal practice to subject culture to an economic analysis and to step up our quests as regards its relations with the economy. This is the way whereby the museums could continue to be what they have always been meant to be: truly in the service of society.
