In Search of Meaning. Cooperation Between Albert Gleizes and Anna Iwaszkiewiczowa

Summary/Abstract: Anna Iwaszkiewiczowa (1897–1980), a Polish writer and translator, undertook to translate a theoretical text by Albert Gleizes (1881–1953), a French cubist painter. The text was published in a Polish monthly “Droga” in 1932. In the same year, Albert Gleizes came to Poland to give lectures on his concept of art in Warsaw and in Łódź. The visit was also organized by Iwaszkiewiczowa, who translated the speeches and supervised the program.The purpose of this article is to present details of this cooperation between the artist and his translator, as well as to analyze Anna Iwaszkiewiczowa’s work with regard to the abovementioned publication and, additionally, to a preserved manuscript of the French original and a draft version of the Polish translation.
