Summary/Abstract: Waligóra defines the embarrassing female performance as an emancipatory gestureperformed in the public sphere to disturb broadly accepted norms and conventions. This type of performance provokes consternation, aversion and aggression, but it canalso be an effective tool to shift the discourse or general views on a given subject, andit can even lead to a change in legislation. Drawing on feminist theory (e.g. Sara Ahmed,Elaine Showalter, Marta Caminero-Santangelo), the theory of affect (Martha Nussbaum)and sociology (Erving Goffman, Nancy Fraser) Waligóra presents five basic traits of thistype of performance.
