Summary/Abstract: The article examines the establishment and competence of the European Public Prosecutor’s Office (EPPO). It outlines the major steps in the long and complicated path to its establishment as well as some of the controversial issues in the adoption of the Council Regulation (EU) 2017/1939 of 12 October 2017 implementing enhanced cooperation on the establishment of the European Public Prosecutor’s Office and the Directive (EU) 2017/1371 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 5 July 2017 on the fight against fraud to the Union's financial interests by means of criminal law. Special attention is paid to the specific crimes under Bulgarian criminal law covered by the EPPO’s competence. The degree of transposition of Directive (EU) 2017/1371 is analyzed and the need of some changes to the Bulgarian Criminal Code is pointed out. Issues concerning the exercise of competence of the EPPO are discussed as well.
