Summary/Abstract: Nowadays, tertiary education institutions are as much exposed to competition as other types of organizations. Problem-based learning, the innovation presented in this paper, is the most important innovation in education for the professions. It encourages learning for capability rather than learning for the sake of acquiring knowledge. Students assisted by a teacher or a tutor learn in teams solving a professional problem and develop many new skills. The research was carried out as a case study, supported by questionnaires and interviews. A typical example of a higher education institution in Slovenia which has been implementing problem-based learning in teaching foreign languages for specific purposes across the curriculum was presented. Both, students and teachers (foreign language teachers and subject teachers) participated in this case study. The article is focused on implementing problem-based learning in higher education institution, on developing of learning organization and the benefits of this innovation for student learning: deep approach to learning and team work which enable higher learning quality and transfer of knowledge from the individual to the team. For this type of education teachers need new knowledge and skills.
