Summary/Abstract: The Need for Closure (NFC) Scale (Webster and Kruglanski, 1994; Polish version by Kossowska, 2003) has been frequently used in psychological research to measure epistemic motivation. However, given the scale’s length, researchers often used abridged versions, selecting a number of items on arbitrary grounds, usually without reporting or validating their item selection. In the present paper we propose a new 15 items version of the NFC scale, based on data obtained from an aggregated heterogeneous adult and student sample (N = 1754). Next, we make comparison of the full and reduced NFC scales, demonstrating that both scales revealed similar psychometric properties and correlations with other variables. Finally, we suggest that the short NFC scale provides researchers with a useful tool for assessing the NFC construct.
