Summary/Abstract: Affirmative action is the name for different measures which aim at improve- ment of the position of discrinimate groups. These measures have been applied in the USA since 1960s and nowadays they are common round Europe as well. The justifi- cation for application of these measures and criteria according to which they are being applied are still the subject of numerous debates. This article analyses the prevailing measures of affirmative action which are being applied in the USA and Europe, ad- vantages and disadvantages of their application and the presence of these regulations in the laws refering to the rights of minorities. The key thesis is that the measures of affirmative action are still necessary and that discrimination is not a matter of the past but that for the accomplishment of the best results it is essential that, instead of boil- ing down to quotas, a larger number of different measures of affirmative action are applied systematically, without belittling the importance of approbating hate speech and xenophobia in media, public condemnation of any kind of discrimination, passing the laws against discrimination, educating minorities on their rights, promoting politi- cal correctness, etc.
