Summary/Abstract: The article analyzes the concept of time in Gaston Bachelard’s works: Intuition of the Instant (1932), The Dialectic of Duration (1936) and Poetic Instant and Metaphysical Instant (1939), showing their consistency in his later philosophy. Bachelard takes Henri Bergson’s thought as a negative point of reference. Disagreement with its fundamental assumptions allows him to crystallize his own theory – the notions of duration and intuition are important for the discussion of the nature of time and the epistemological conditions. Bachelard acknowledges the ontological primacy of the moment and he shows its consequences at the level of human experience in everyday life and in the creative work. The theory of time forms the basis for his historical epistemology and the concept of poetry. Based on discontinued time, he emphasizes the value of creative novelty and freedom.
