Summary/Abstract: This paper is an edition of unfinnished manuscript. The manuscript of Dvorník’s last, unfinished work is preserved in a typed manuscript of 386 pages with numerous hand-writt en corrections made in at least two different hands. My colleague Martina Čechová and I fi rst digitized the text1 and made basic corrections, which appeared mainly in passages with hand-writt en insertions as byproduct of the digitalization. Afterwards , I made a number of small stylistic changes including unifying the capitalization. The late Professor Dvorník, in accordance with the style common in his time, frequently used capital lett ers depicting general entities and titles (such as empire, church, emperor). In the edited text, however, capital lett ers have been kept to the minimum in agreement with present-day standards. The diff erent spelling of names, refl ecting versions common in the diff erent languages studied by Professor Dvorník, were also unifi ed in order to avoid confusion. The handwritt en corrections were inserted wherever it was possible. At times, however, these impacted the grammatical structure of the sentence and in such cases the typewritt en version of the text was preserved. In some cases, the sequence of words in a sentence was changed in order to facilitate the reading of the monograph. The quoted works, underlined by Professor Dvorník in his text, were converted into titles in italics according to present-day usage. Fragmentary footnotes preserved in the text were deleted as they were incomplete in the manuscript and, in course of time, became progressively outdated.
