Summary/Abstract: When Professor Vavřínek kindly invited me to participate in this symposium devoted to the memory of Father Dvornik, I was slightly surprised, in that my own scholarly interests were very different from our honorand’s. But when Professor Vavřínek explained that he wanted me to recall my memories of Father Dvornik from the days when I was personally acquainted with him, I was happy to recall a memorable year at Dumbarton Oaks. No doubt many present today will be personally acquainted with that remarkable Centre of research in the field of Byzantine Studies located in the old colonial town of Georgetown, now more or less in the centre of Washington. But today I would like to take you back a couple of generations, before the development of Dumbarton Oaks into its present form, to earlier times when the owners of the estate and founders of the research institute, Robert and Mildred Bliss, were still active and played a personal role in the life of the community.
