Language Awareness of the Inhabitants of the Village Burzyn

Summary/Abstract: The results of the research presented in the article were based on a study of language awareness of the populaton of the village of Burzyn in the district of Jedwabne. My research is based on A. Markowski’s definition of language awareness. The respondents represent four different groups of different age, education, class and current occupation although differences between the groups were very small. In the article I present the respondents’ ideas on the subject of different languages spoken by different generations, neighbouring villages, cities and other regions of Poland. The residents of Burzyn had some knowledge and ideas on the subject of their everyday spoken language which is based on the Podlasie local dialect. The study showed that the community was well aware of the autonomy of its language.
