Summary/Abstract: As a part of the curricular reform in Croatian elementary schools and high schools, since the school year 2018/19, one of the most important changes has been the introduction of formative assessment along with summative assessment, which dominated the traditional approach to teaching. In accordance with the new Croatian Language Curriculum for Elementary Schools and Gymnasiums (2019) and in accordance with the curricula for other subjects, formative assessment consists of assessment as learning and of assessment for learning. This paper will trace these new demands and propose possible ways of assessment of the forms of student’s linguistic expression in Croatian language in grammar schools using the genre of the essay as an exemplary text. The paper describes situations and assignments in which students were using different rubrics while preparing and writing their essays. It is explained how these assignments and rubrics encourage student’s reflection on their own writing process and how they encourage the development of their metacognitive knowledge. The purpose of the paper is to offer examples, already tried out in the classroom, which connect some methods of formative assessment with student’s linguistic expression in Croatian language and help students attain complex knowledge and competences needed for functional and creative literacy.
