Summary/Abstract: The author examines the credibility of the Acts of the Apostles’ testimony about the centurion Cornelius and the Italian Cohort from Caesarea Maritima. The analysis of written sources and epigraphic data indicates that the presence of an Italian cohort at Caesarea was no coincidence. This troop performed a function quite unusual for the Roman army, being a sort of “peace-keeping force” preventing the escalation of the conflict between the Greeks and the Jews.
