Summary/Abstract: The revision of the Chronological Dictionary of the Romanian Novel from its Origins to 2000, a project conceived in the late 1970s and published in a first edition in 2004, had to reconsider and reorganize the subgenre taxonomy used for the complete labelling of the Romanian novel production between 1884 and 2000. This article presents the theoretical framework that substantiates such a literary historiographical instrument, the list of subgenres, its criteria, as well as the cultural relevance of the proposed classification system.
