Summary/Abstract: This article evaluates whether and how constitutional replacements influence the quality of democracy in Latin America. The fuzzy-set qualitative comparative analysis method is applied while analysing 18 countries. The results reveal that constitutional replacements are neither sufficient nor necessary condition for improving the quality of democracy in the region. On the contrary, the parsimonious solution shows that quality of democracy can be explained either by high levels of education and inversion of constitutional replacements or institutionalised party system, non-homogeneous society and inversion of constitutional replacements. Analysis of poor quality democratic regimes showed that constitutional replacements, together with high-income inequality, deinstitutionalised party system and non-homogenous society or high-income inequality, low educational attainment level and non-homogenous society, form sufficient conditions for the poor quality of democracy in Latin America.
