Summary/Abstract: The area surrounding the town of Samokov is rich in archaeological remains dating from pre-historic to the late medieval times. Some of the remains are quite destroyed by human activities and treasure hunting. Due to the new conditions of opening and adapting to the European cultural valuables we need a new vision for the Bulgarian Archaeological heritage. The huge natural and historical resources give us the chance for creating new tourist routes and attractions for exposing the whole variety of archaeological, ethnographical and ecological surroundings. This project has started in 2004 with ethnological expedition in the village of Dospey and archaeological research of “Shishmanovo kale”. Excavating the area, we localized the borders of the fortification and fortress walls. In the suburb of the ancient village we found remains of early Christian basilica (IV-VI century), Medieval church (X-XII century) and iron workshops. Future archaeological excavations, researches and exposing will illustrate the rich history of the town of Samokov and its surroundings from late antiquity (IV-VI century) and medieval times (X-IV century). Our aim is to make our archaeological objects one of the most attractive destinations for tourists from Bulgaria and all over the world.
