Summary/Abstract: The paper discusses the new tendencies of research in the Russian Federation. Until the eighties of the 20th century the research of the popular culture was primarily focused on the village culture or on what is called “classical folklore”. Still, the village and town cultures and folklore are closely related: many people who left villages and moved to towns preserved the main specifics of their folklore culture, and vice versa, the urban culture influenced the village one in many respects. On the other hand, the urban folklore differs from the folklore of the village: the individual aspects are stronger, some oral genres disappeared, such as ritual songs, tales and were replaced by new folklore forms, such as the socalled chastushka (short, funny songs) and anecdote, which did not have analogy in the folklore of the village. This new urban phenomenon is referred to as post-folklore.
