Summary/Abstract: The paper sets out to examine the composition and motivation of the noun šlapjurgis: the second meaning of the above word ('drunkard') seems to have been derived from the analogous German words Naflbruder, Saufbruder. Afterwards the development of the semantic field gerti ('drink alcohol') in the Lithuanian language dictionaries of the 17th-18th centuries is overviewed, the synonymy and origin of identifying units is discussed.
