Summary/Abstract: In the past decades the expansion policy of hard discounters has been receiving increasing scientific attention. One of the main reasons for their success is location choices, which needs geographical thinking and the knowledge of the socio-economic environment. Although it is of key importance to gain territories with purchasing power territories in this competition, each company has to implement their own geostrategy. While discount stores are operating in an urban environment, national franchise small stores have an extensive networks in the rural area. This paper assesses the position of multinational discount stores, particularly their competition with Coop, the national cooperative chain in Northern Hungary.
