Summary/Abstract: Along with a number of smaller ethnic groups, the Sinhalese and Tamil communities have lived on the island of Sri Lanka, for up to two thousand years – though the origins of both groups are murky and are only explained in a number of ancient religious texts. The Sinhalese traditionally practice Theravada Buddhism, the oldest surviving form of that religion, and the Tamils are mostly Hindu. But the roots of the modern conflict are not considered religious in origin, and are generally traced to much more recent times.
