Summary/Abstract: The essay lays out the production of Goethe’s and Schiller’s Xenien and situates it in the (socio-)historic context of the evolving literary market. Starting with Franz Schwarzbauer’s observation, due to which the Xenien form an „epigrammatischen Karnevalszug [epigrammatical carnival procession]“ (SCHWARZBAUER 1993:317), the analysis once more inquires about the dimension of the carnivalesque. The result of this inquiry is put in relation to the main features of Weimar Classicism’s aesthetic doctrine.
