Summary/Abstract: Although Kafka deals with China’s social structures and ways of thinking at the beginning of the 20th century, that is, at a time when China’s political upheaval gets international attention, his image of China is essentially characterized by its own poetic self-image. This is to be shown on the basis of three examples: Jan-Tsen-Tsai’s poem „In the Depths of Night“, Kafka’s short story The Great Wall of China, and Dschuang Dsi’s parable Dreaming of a Butterfly.
