Summary/Abstract: During the Russo-Turkish War of 1877–1878, a Polish volunteer legion was set up by the Polish immigrant group in Turkey to help the Ottoman army. In parallel to this, in the spring and the early summer of 1877, some military veterans resolved to create a substantial Hungarian volunteer legion also helping to the Turkish side in the war. Shortly afterwards, some prominent Hungarians decided to set up a Szekler legion to support the Ottomans. The main military goal of which was a secret military mission to Romania to cut off the supplies of the Russian and Romanian armies by exploding a train bridge. These legion groups included soldiers who before were previously members of the Mexican Austrian Volunteer Army of Maximilian Hapsburg the Emperor of Mexico (1864–1867).
