Summary/Abstract: The model of the puppet dance and the motif of the artist as a mar-ionette were theoretically interpreted in works on Heinrich von Kleist, Gordon Craig, as well as in some concepts of modernism. In 1906, an extravagant ballet dancer and choreographer translated some of his ideas and stage productions into the practices of the early film: Alexander Shiryaev made remarkable sketches and animated films in the early twentieth century. Where are the cross points between animation, modern dance practices and puppet theatre? Whose body dances better: the human imitating a puppet, or that of a puppet imitating a human being? And where: on the stage or on a film set?
