Summary/Abstract: The article observes the improvisation as one of the most common practices in jazz music. Nowadays, in the 21st century, we can hardly define it as a completely spontaneous act. But what are the rules of developing this act? The focus is on the evolution of jazz improvisation in the 20th century. Traditional jazz improvisation gives place to the avant-garde. The article highlights the significant changes that Miles Davis, Cecil Taylor, Albert Ayler, Don Cherry, Ornette Coleman and John Coltrane made in their music – the new compositional forms, modality, sonority, tonal center, motive improvisation and chain association. Interaction between musicians is vital. All these changes reflected on jazz music in Bulgaria, in the compositions of Milcho Leviev, Veselin Nikolov, Simeon Shterev.
