Summary/Abstract: The article deals with the problem of drunkenness in the late Plato’s dialogue “The Laws” and its relation to education. Drinking wine is prohibited in the dialogue “Republic” but it finds its place in assistance of education in “The Laws”. Plato gives different account of the soul and the state compared to his early views. Sentiments and passions take an important place in the soul being important factor in the education of a virtues person. Education is examined as a livelong process important for the old as much as it is important for the young. The article examines Plato’s idea about the loss of education in the old age and its regaining through the ritual of civilized and controlled drunkenness.
