Summary/Abstract: The paper examines the relationship between the stage director’s explication and the finished production in the field of text-based theatre. It seeks for answers to two key issues: how much an explication of the director is the first materialization of his concept and what are the main variants of its developing into performance. For this goal the article considered an explication of Chekhov’s The Seagull by significant stage director Krasimir Spasov (which was published) and compared it with the realized production at the National Theatre in 1995. The research methodology combines contextual, literary and performance analysis.
