Summary/Abstract: The ‘kingpin strategy’ is a key concept applied to crack down on the major leaders of organised drug crime groups, launched by the consecutive Mexican governments, and supported by the United States. The paper looks at the Mexican approach to the notion of security against the backdrop of the war that is being waged against drugs cartels. It focuses on the key assumptions underlying the ‘kingpin strategy’, and the way in which it was launched during the Calderón and Peña Nieto presidencies. Emphasis has also been placed on the outcomes of the strategy, and its impact on the level of security in Mexico.
