Summary/Abstract: The paper gives a summary about the history of the research concerning the origin of Viola, the duchess of the polish Opole in the first half of the 13th century. She was the wife of Casimir I. of Opole and the mother of the latter dukes Mieszko II. Obese and Władysław I. Based on the information of Jan Długosz from the 15th century Viola is mostly considered as a Polish duchess of Bulgarian origin, although due to other data some scholars assume, she could be originated from Hungary, or from Halych-Volhynia. The study converges the propositions and arguments concerning Viola, and gives a so far out of consideration leaved source into the dispute: the papal mandate given to Coloman, duke of Slavonia, about the protection of Viola.
