Summary/Abstract: The article presents recent development of the Polish political left after crisis of the Democratic Left Alliance and its government in 2004. The main objective of the article is to analyse possible changes of the meaning of the Polish left, due to the new strategy adopted after the crisis. The left in Poland does not reflect social and economical interests, but is determined by the historical cleavage linked to the transformation to democracy. Thus to the political left belong all parties, which origin lies in the former communistic party. Although the main representative of the left – Democratic Left Alliance had made several attempts to weaken its continuity with communistic past, it has been still perceived as communistic successor party. The paper holds that in case the continuity with communistic past is severed, the possibility of reconstruction of the political left according to social and economical interests will arise.
