Summary/Abstract: To celebrate the 2000th anniversary of the death of Emperor Augustus, the prestigious Grand Palais, in concert with the Roman Capitoline Museums and the Louvre, has set up an extremely ambitious project: an exhibition with the largest collection of representations ever displayed about the Roman statesman. The spectacular event focused on two distinctive features: the representation of the emperor as a private person, and the artistic yield of the golden age. As a side note, one can observe that due to the strong emphasis put on the artistic side, this extremely informative exhibition tends to slip into a one-sided portrait. The attentive visitor cannot escape that the downsides of that era and the complex story of the losers of the political changes fade into the background besides the grandiose work of Augustan propaganda.
