Summary/Abstract: The paper aims at describing the biblical model for kingship of Louis IX, the role of King Solomon in his representation. King Solomon became the symbol of wisdom and royal justice, but he was an ambivalent fi gure of the Bible. The present author reviews the Solomonic image in the written sources such as ’mirrors of princes’, sermons, ordines for the coronation, liturgy (offi ce text) and of course in the fi ne arts where he was prominently presented during the reign of Louis IX. The analysis of the rose glass window in the cathedral of Chartres shows the main role of Blanche of Castile in the Solomonic image in the public discourse of King Louis. He had several biblical models next to Solomon, like King David, Josiah, Josue but Solomon was one of the main models for him, and his courtly surroundings called him novus Salomon. This model was mostly signifi cant during the fi rst half of his reign (before 1254) and at the time of his canonization in the hagiographic portrait of Louis IX. The concluding part of the analysis points out the importance of Solomon in the self–perception of King Louis, which was generally a positive image for him (except of for exemple some scenes of the stained glasses in the Sainte-Chapelle and certain parts of the sermons of Jacob of Lausanne).
