Summary/Abstract: In the popular consciousness of our country, the figure of the guslar is unequivocally masculine, epic and heroic, and the figure of the flute is masculine, pastoral and domestic. Unraveling these tropes is not easy, although there are many reasons to do so, among other things to show the role of female folk creators in the past, and especially in the present, living tradition of our climate. The book Female guslars and players on traditional instruments in Serbia by ethnomusicologist, theoretician and professor at the Faculty of Music in Belgrade is that missing study that sheds light on the phenomenon of women’s playing and guslar creation. It was published in 2019 in the edition of Clio, within the series Ars musica, and with the support of the Ministry of Education, Science and Technological Development of the Republic of Serbia. This important study was derived from a doctoral dissertation defended by Iva Nenić at the Faculty of Music, but it was transformed into an independent and stand-alone study away from the academic requirements of a doctorate and thus open to a wider readership.
