Summary/Abstract: Over the 47 years of its membership in the European Communities and later in the European Union, Great Britain made sure that its membership was based on special conditions. From the very beginning, this was a source of great difficulties. After many years of laborious negotiations, Great Britain ultimately became a member of the Communities in 1973, along with Denmark and Ireland. The relationships of Great Britain with the European Communities were always ancillary to specific British interests, with the European interests regarded to a lesser extent. After the British citizens’ referendum decision in 2016, the United Kingdom became the first country which chose to leave the European Union. It is now difficult to unequivocally assess what its long-term and definitive consequences will be for the economies of Great Britain and the European Union. The analysts are not in agreement in this regard, especially since the COVID-19 pandemic also exerts a massive impact on the economic situation of European countries.
