Summary/Abstract: Confederations and federations are complex states. There are certain similarities between them, but also great differences. Whether a state represents a federation or a confederation depends on its status in the international community. The paper determines the legal determination of federally and confederally organized states, as well as their mutual comparison. The aim of this paper is to establish a clear distinction between federations and confederations, ie to provide their international legal definition.
