Ivaylo: a great journey of a tragic hero. Film and prose narrative about a medieval rebel leader

Summary/Abstract: Ivaylo has been perceived as a liberator and defender of the country, or otherwise as a renovator and revolutionary fighting the feudal system of oppression. Ivaylo has been featured in Bulgarian historical novels by the writers like Karapetrov, Karaslavov, Velkov, Zagorchinov and in the film Ivaylo (1964). Ivaylo represents a model hero that abandons hitherto life and sets off on a journey to seek social, spiritual, and political enlightenment. A sense of loss or lack determines the beginning of the journey, shown in a series of adventures. These events form a cycle, covering the journey and the return of the character. The main plot tells his story of reaching maturity (emotional, intellectual and physical, etc.), of setting off on a journey in search of a life-changing idea to win a victory on a macrocosmic scale.
