Summary/Abstract: Certain recurring figures and motifs in emblematic works of Bulgarian dramaturgy could be traced. The Bulgarian theatrical tradition seems to be inherently based oncyclical returns to the beginnings of modern Bulgarian drama. The links with the archaic of the folk art as well as with the universal intuitions of modern European art make these dramatic works “classic” for the national cultural tradition. The most popular plays of the interwar period could be seen as mirror projections of figures and motifs from iconic plays from the beginning of the century. Following the Second World War till nowadays Bulgarian theatre turned to look back to this dramaturgical heritage re-discovering its national identity. This process did not take place without hesitations and reverses but gradually some of the plays by Petko Todorov, Anton Strashimirov, Peyo Yavorov, Yordan Yovkov, Racho Stoyanov, St. L. Kostov acquired the status of Bulgarian classic drama.
