Summary/Abstract: Phatic communion is a terminological invention overshadowed by newer developments with the same core term. The original text, saturated with linguistic oddities, is still read today as a landmark in the history of linguistic anthropology but little of it is well understood. The aim of this paper is to introduce to the readers for the first time the main sources that played a role in the development of this concept. These include Malinowski’s continuous sparring with Durkheim, his dubious treatment of Mahaffy’s theory of conversation, how he concealed his reference to Trotter’s “conversation of greeting” which gave phatic communion its main content, and how his denial of classical linguistic functions in order to invent a new function avoids self-contradiction only in light of Dewey’s scheme of linguistic functions.
