Summary/Abstract: Romanian scientist, engineer, physicist, researcher and inventor, Nicolae Vasilescu-Karpen received his engineer degree from the School of Bridges, Roads and Mines of Bucharest and the PhD degree in physics from the University of Paris. As a researcher, he had an intense activity in different scientific domains, with notable achievements in mechanical engineering, elasticity, thermodynamics, long distance telephony, electrochemistry, and civil engineering. Among his inventions, the most known remains the termoelectric battery with uniform temperature, which works using only the atmospheric temperature. Beside the researcher career, Nicolae Vasilescu-Karpen was dedicated also to the professorship activity. He was the Director of the National School of Bridges and Roads of Bucharest (1918–1920) and the Rector of the Politechnical School of Bucharest (1920–1940). As a recognition of his activity he was nominated corresponding member of the Romanian Academy in 1919, member from 1923, Vicepresident (1930–1932 and 1942–1944) and President (1945–1948) of the Scientific Society, and Honorary member of the „Société française des électriciens”.
