Summary/Abstract: This article explores the manner in which language awareness strategies (sprachsensibler Fachunterricht) in Content Language Integrated Learning and in German for specific purposes find their roots in the didactics of German as a foreign language. How does teaching through the lens of language awareness impact learning outcomes and what are the proper tasks supporting the production of both content and language in the didactics of translation? Previous work has not yet looked into how principles of cooperative learning and types of exercises and tasks found in teaching foreign language can improve text comprehension, usage of specific vocabulary, writing and prepare the act of translation. The case study describes didactic steps undertaken to prepare students for translating parts of a text. After activating vocabulary and prior knowledge on the topic, students work on specific vocabulary and work on the text in a cooperative manner. In the attempt to translate parts of the text from English into German and vice versa, students apply previously acquired reading and comprehension strategies in completing a productive task.
