PRESERVATION OF THE FACE AND ITS IMPACT ON THE VERBAL EXCHANGE AND THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN CAREGIVER AND CAREGIVER

Summary/Abstract: The relationship between a caregiver and a patient functions according to specific conventions. The latter regulate the structure of the exchanges that the aforementioned interlocutors co-construct. Those conventions constitute standard references from which interlocutors have to interact with precaution. Nonetheless, the guidelines of prescription and proscription that enable caregivers and patients to avoid disparity remain blurred, preceding dissimilar perceptions. Face management is where the manifestation of discordances usually occur. This article aims at demonstrating that face-saving strategies are differently deployed depending on whether we hold the point of view of the patient or the perspective of the caregiver. Those discordances in the way of seeing elements bring about incomprehension, misunderstanding, and the transformation of deficient medical information. Hence, a retrogression in the therapeutic relationship.
