Summary/Abstract: The present article proposes a semio-pragmatic analysis of a corpus of utterances and segments of speech which appear in the text of the Eucharistic Liturgy and whose enactment, underpinned by their own performativity, entails the presence of worshippers in their quality as liturgical actants. We aim to show that celebrating this central service of Orthodoxy without lay believers, as was the case during the Covid-19 pandemic in Romania, led to a crisis of the liturgical language at the level of its enactment, ritual in nature and spiritually consequential.
