Summary/Abstract: The process of heritage-making generally occurs over a long period and requires the convergence of different actors (public policies, private initiatives, citizen organizations). The result is the construction of a patrimonial object often loaded with strong cultural and identity values. As a result, through its conversion to a heritage site, a natural space may acquire new environmental and cultural meanings as well as political or economic ones. It can become a tourist resource, a community touchstone, or a local and regional brand. More specifically, our paper aims to study the mechanisms of the conversion of nature into heritage space and their social, economic, and cultural repercussions through a case study: the geological formation of the Basque Coast flysch and its transformation into a geopark between 2007 and 2017.
